The Compleat Leviathan

about

Recorded and released twenty years ago (2003), the song "Breathing Rust" is one of the very few extant recordings from VERMITHRAX PEJORATIVE, a Maryland-area doom metal band that originally went under the name Leviathan AD before disbanding in the early 2000s. After lineup issues and disagreements in a desired shift in style (of which "Breathing Rust" is the best example), the band ceased all operations as members went on to work in a myriad of other regional projects, which include black metallers ATHAME, ur-doom trio FORTRESS, black thrash / post-punk outfit WOLFNUKE, death metal band BEYOND FATAL, and assorted MD heavy rock bands like BAILJACK, SLAGSTORM, and WAR INJUN.

Initially influenced directly by the Maryland / DC-area traditional doom metal scene (Internal Void, The Obsessed, and by default, SAINT VITUS) and filthier, crustier hardcore punk, the band released a single demo (2001's "Verthithrax Apocalypse") along with a few compilations (such as 2003's Destroysall : A Tribute To Godzilla). By the time the band recorded the song "Breathing Rust", however, their direction turned in a much different direction, with frontman / guitarist AW attempting to reconcile the doom metal roots with a longstanding obsession with the melodic post-hardcore of bands like "Capsized"-era SAMIAM, early JAWBREAKER, and "Weak"-era SEAWEED.

This song appeared on the now long-out-of-print Doom Capital: Maryland DC Heavy Rock Underground compilation CD, and has been unavailable online / digitally until now.

This long-buried song is being dusted off and presented here as the first step in the reformation of VERMITHRAX PEJORATIVE with two of the key original members. New songs are currently written and soon to be recorded, keeping in the same vein as the sound on display here.

Other out-of-print and long-lost recordings from the original lineup will be posted here in the near future.

The band's original work released under the LEVIATHAN A.D. name are represented at Metal-Archives here:

The artwork presented here is a detail of the amazing 1622 painting "Les Enfers" by enigmatic French artist François de Nomé, a major figure in the Baroque period. His almost proto-Surrealistic imagery has long been a favorite among the active members of VERMITHRAX PEJORATIVE, and his artwork will continue to be used solely by the band for all forthcoming creative projects.

REVIEWS:

"...the raw and primal Leviathan AD takes charge afterwards with an absolutely punishing track of fucking menacing doom in "Breathing Rust": Distant, somewhat strained singing that possesses tons of feeling, backed by massively ominous chord progressions... by far one of the most sinister and forceful compositions herein (not to mention the longest at nearly eight minutes). Awesome." - AVERSIONLINE 2004
